In addition to our neuropsychological evaluation services, we also offer emotional functioning assessment and personality testing. These psychological evaluations provide crucial insights for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment planning.
These evaluations, which usually take approximately two hours in the office (not including time for scoring, integration of results, interpretation and report), are helpful to assess current emotional state, coping resources, and look for signs of a psychiatric illness or emotional disorder. The psychological evaluation consists of an interview as well as administration of one or more gold-standard questionnaires and tests such as the MMPI-2, MMPI-A, PAI, MCMI-IV, and others. Projective testing can also be done as indicated or requested.
This Testing is Helpful For:
- Candidacy Evaluations: For individuals who wish to be a surrogate parent/surrogate mother or for candidates for weight loss surgery (bariatric surgery or lap band surgical procedures).
- Diagnostic Clarity: For conditions like depression, anxiety, or psychosis, helping to differentiate between diagnoses and understand symptom severity.
- Bipolar Disorder: To assess mood regulation patterns and provide data for effective medication and therapy management.
- Behavioral Disorders: For concerns related to Oppositional/Defiant Disorder, Conduct Disorder, or Intermittent Explosive Disorder.
- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: To evaluate the nature and impact of obsessions and compulsions.
- Other Psychological Conditions: To determine if a psychiatric illness is present and to guide next steps.
The Evaluation Process
After the testing is completed, you will be scheduled (if appropriate) for a feedback session to review the results. The results of the testing will be discussed in detail along with conclusions and recommendations for treatment and follow up. (Some referral situations, such as candidacy to be a surrogate, usually do not include a feedback session).
In many cases, these evaluations are, in part, reimbursed by insurance if you have out of network coverage. We can discuss payment and insurance issues when you call us.

Frequently Asked Questions About Psychological Evaluations
The primary purpose of a psychological evaluation is to gain a deeper understanding of an individual’s emotional state, personality, and coping mechanisms. It is used to clarify diagnoses (like depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder), guide treatment planning, and provide objective information for specific purposes like bariatric surgery or surrogacy candidacy.
A psychological evaluation focuses on emotional and personality functioning, assessing for conditions like mood and anxiety disorders. A neuropsychological evaluation, on the other hand, focuses on cognitive functions like memory, attention, and executive functioning, often assessing for conditions like ADHD, brain injury, or dementia.
The evaluation includes a clinical interview to discuss your history and current concerns. You will also complete one or more standardized questionnaires and tests, such as the MMPI-2 or PAI. The process is designed to be straightforward and non-invasive, typically taking about two hours in our office.
The results are integrated into a comprehensive report that provides diagnostic insights and tailored recommendations. This can be used by you and your therapist or physician to create a more effective treatment plan, or to fulfill requirements for medical procedures or other candidacy evaluations.
In many cases, these evaluations are partially reimbursed by insurance if you have out-of-network coverage. We recommend contacting your insurance provider to understand your specific benefits. We are happy to discuss payment and insurance issues when you call our office
