Online Neuropsychological Testing

Cognitive Assessment Group offers neuropsychological testing by a board certified neuropsychologist, delivered by telehealth in 43 states.

Online neuropsychological testing lets you complete a full evaluation for ADHD, memory concerns, or other cognitive questions from your own home, using secure video technology instead of an in-person office visit. The testing does not substantially change. The same standardized measures (for the most part), the same board-certified neuropsychologist, and the same detailed written report. What changes is how you access it.

Cognitive Assessment Group extends Dr. Wilfred G. van Gorp’s in-person practice in New York City and Chicago to patients nationwide through telehealth. If you live outside the commuting distance of either office, cannot easily take time off for travel, or simply prefer the convenience of testing from home, online neuropsychological testing offers the same clinical rigor without the trip.

How Online Neuropsychological Testing Works

A telehealth evaluation follows the same structure as an in-person one, just delivered over secure video. It begins with a detailed clinical interview covering developmental, medical, and academic history, the same starting point used in any comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation. From there, standardized tests of attention, memory, processing speed, and executive function are administered over video, with some materials sent to you in advance when a test requires physical materials rather than a screen.

After testing is complete, the same scoring and interpretation process applies as it would for an in-person evaluation, and you receive a full written report with specific, practical recommendations, not just a diagnosis.

Is Telehealth Testing as Accurate as In-Person Testing?

Yes, for the large majority of standardized neuropsychological measures used with adults. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis published in The Clinical Neuropsychologist compared telehealth-administered and in-person test scores across a wide range of commonly used measures and found the two formats produced results that were, on average, remarkably close. In most of the test comparisons reviewed, scores differed by less than a single point between the two formats.

This does not mean every evaluation is equally well suited to telehealth. The research behind this finding focused on adult testing. Evaluations that depend on direct behavioral observation in young children, discussed below, are a different situation.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Online Testing

Telehealth neuropsychological testing is a strong option for adults being evaluated for ADHD or documentation for workplace or academic accommodations, adults with memory or cognitive concerns following an illness, injury, or persistent brain fog, college students and professionals who need testing accommodations but cannot easily travel for an in-person evaluation, patients outside commuting distance of our New York City or Chicago offices, and anyone who prefers the scheduling flexibility or comfort of testing from home.

Some evaluations are better suited to an in-person visit, at least in part. Autism evaluations for young children often rely on direct behavioral observation, including the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2), which should be administered in person. For these evaluations, we typically recommend an in-person visit or a hybrid approach that combines a telehealth interview with an in-office observation session. During your intake call, we will help determine whether telehealth, in-person, or a hybrid format fits your specific evaluation.

For most standardized adult testing, yes. A 2025 meta-analysis published in The Clinical Neuropsychologist found that telehealth and in-person test scores were nearly identical across most commonly used measures. Some evaluations, particularly certain autism assessments in young children, are better suited to an in-person or hybrid format.
